Tech falls to Maryland 18-9
Pieper scores three goals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With a balanced attack that saw three Maryland players score at least three goals each, the Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell 18-9 to the Terrapins on Friday evening in an Atlantic Coast Conference match.
Junior Lindsay Pieper led the Hokies with three goals, while sophomore Natasha Fuchs scored twice, and had two assists.
Maryland (9-3, 1-2 ACC) took a 3-0 lead before Tech (6-5, 0-3 ACC) got on the board with a goal with 22:50 remaining in the first half from senior Stephanie Jones. The Terrapins tallied the next three goals before an unassisted score from Hokie junior Britt Faulkner with 8:30 left.
Maryland closed out the half with goals by Delia Cox and Krista Pellizzi, who scored three of her five goals in the first half. The Terps led 9-2 at halftime.
The Hokies stepped up their game in the second half, scoring seven goals. After Maryland scored the first four goals of the half, all in the first three minutes, senior Katie Boyle netted her first score of the game with 24:30 left.
The Terrapins' Katie Doolittle and Pellizzi tallied the next two goals of the game to give Maryland its largest lead, 15-3, but through the final fifteen minutes of the contest, the Hokies outscored Maryland 6-3.
Pieper started the scoring with a goal with 14:41 left, assisted by Fuchs. Sophomore Katie Russo, returning from an ankle injury that caused her to miss the last several games, scored at the 11:52 mark.
Following a goal by Maryland's Kelly Kasper, who led the Terrapins with five goals and four assists, Pieper fired back for Tech with the next two goals.
The scoring for Tech was rounded out by Fuchs, who tallied two unassisted goals with 2:35 and 22 seconds remaining.
In goal, senior Carrie Hill made three saves, while freshman Caitlin Thomas had five. Freshman Megan Waters also played. For Maryland, Allie Buote had two saves.
In addition to Kasper and Pellizzi, Doolittle tallied three goals for Maryland.
Tech had a 20-18 advantage in ground balls. Junior Jamie Webster and senior Casey Goodman each had three ground balls. Boyle, Pieper, and sophomore Christen Fratter each caused two turnovers. Maryland hed a 24-5 advantage in draw controls, and a 35-21 advantage in shots.
The Hokies return to the friendly confines of the Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium on Tuesday, April 4 at 5 p.m. against the Bobcats of Ohio University.
