BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team dropped its first-ever game against the Denver Pioneers, Friday evening, 19-7, at the Tech Lacrosse Stadium. Junior Jenna Reich notched a career-high two goals for the Hokies, while seniors Lindsay Pieper and Britt Faulkner contributed two points apiece.
The Pioneers opened the game on a five goal scoring streak before sophomore Casey Warner slipped her first goal of the season past Denver's goalkeeper at the 9:30 mark. Reich took a pass from Faulkner 35 seconds later to record the Hokies' second straight goal. Freshman Faith Richards then found Pieper a little over a minute later to cut the Pioneers' lead to two, at 5-3.
Denver responded though, with the final three goals of the first half, to extend their lead back to four, at 8-3, leading into the intermission.
That's as close as the Hokies would get, as the Pioneers capitalized on the opening 17 minutes of the second half, scoring 10 straight goals. Tech attempted to string together a run of goals within the next four minutes, as Faulkner fired a shot into the back of the net 18:30 into the half. Pieper then took advantage of a Pioneer foul, scoring on a free position shot and Kady McBrearty notched the Hokies' third unanswered goal at the 8:01 mark. But, Karen Morton and Steph Coyne teamed up to halt Tech's run, as Morton put a shot past Tech's keeper with 3:57 remaining to play.
Reich finished the game with a score for the Hokies, but Tech was unable to overcome the slow start to the second half. Sophomore Kari Morrison stopped 11 shots in the cage for the Hokies, including eight in the opening half.
Tech will look to rebound Sunday afternoon, as they host George Mason, in their third of a four-game homestand. Opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
