Tech (2-10) was led by senior Kady McBrearty in points with two goals and one assist. Jenna Reich, Kate Tracey, Allie Emala and Rachel Culp each contributed goals in the contest.
The Tar Heels' Erica LaGrow had the first goal three-and-a-half minutes into the game. North Carolina found the goal two more times until Emala's draw control helped the Hokies find the back of the net for the first time as Reich scored with 19:54 left in the first half.
North Carolina (8-2) answered with three unanswered goals over the next 12 minutes until McBrearty brought the score to 7-2 with 8:24 left in the half.
McBrearty assisted Tracey in the last Hokie goal of the half with 1:14 on the clock.
The Tar Heels built on their 11-3 halftime lead by scoring two more goals in a 10-minute span.
Two saves and a fast clear by goalie Kari Morrison helped the Hokies capitalize in the midfield to give McBrearty her second goal of the game with 18:02 left to play.
After North Carolina's goal with 12:08 on the clock and the score at 4-15, the Hokies rallied to fire in two unanswered goals within the next 2:10.
Emala's goal with 3:52 left in the game marked the last goal for the Hokies before Tar Heels' Meghan Clarke scored bringing the final score to 16-6.
The midfield held strong off the draw, contributing a total of 14 draw controls. McBrearty, Tracey, and Culp contributed two apiece while Emala had a game high of four draw controls.
Despite a defensive season low of four ground balls, Morrison had 11 saves on the day.
The Hokies return to Blacksburg to face Ohio State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Tech Lacrosse Stadium.
