Hokies drop regular-season finale

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech Hokies lost a 20-3 decision to #3 Maryland (14-1) on Saturday. Maryland clinched the first seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament with a 4-1 conference record. With the loss, the Hokies receive the sixth seed in the tournament with an 0-4 conference mark and will face the third-seeded Duke on Thursday at 1 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.

Three Hokies contributed goals in the match. Kate Tracey's goal with 20:13 left in the first half tied the game, 1-1, in response to Maryland's goal within the first 30 seconds of play.

Rachel Culp tied the score at 2-2 three-and-a-half minutes later before the Terrapins controlled the rest of the half by scoring nine goals before the halftime buzzer. Maryland's Dana Dobbie and Lauren Cohen scored two goals apiece in that span.

Maryland's 12-2 halftime lead was extended as Caitlyn McFadden scored within the first two minutes of the second half. Captain Kady McBrearty answered back with 23:37 to play to bring the score to 12-3.

McBrearty's goal marked the last time the Hokies found the back of the net for the duration of the game. In the remaining 23 minutes of play, Maryland secured its lead with eight unanswered goals.

The Terps held a 34-9 advantage in shots over the Hokies and a 20-5 advantage in draw controls.

Goalkeeper Kari Morrison led the Hokies with four ground balls, and notched eight saves on the day. Freshman defender Sam Voulker had a season high of three ground balls.

The Hokies will prepare for their fifth ACC Tournament appearance with the number six seed and will face third-seeded Duke at 1 p.m. on Thursday in Scott Stadium.
