Virginia defeats Tech 19-3
February 18, 2009

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Virginia took the lead 2:24 into the match and never looked back, beating the Virginia Tech women’s lacrosse team 19-3 in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Klockner Stadium. Tech falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the ACC. The match marked the season opener for the Cavaliers.

Virginia jumped out to an early lead, scoring two quick goals to open then match and built a 5-0 advantage in the opening 11:18. The Hokies broke through with an unassisted goal scored by Jessica Nonn (Fr., Catonsville, Md.) at the 18:12 mark to pull the score to 5-1. However, the Wahoos tallied four unanswered goals in the next 12:05 to lead 9-1 with 6:07 remaining in the first half.

Nonn struck again for Tech at the 5:26 mark with her second goal of the match and the third of her young career. Allie Emala (So., Baltimore, Md.), the Hokies’ leading scorer, was credited with the assist.

UVa would tack on another score shortly before the half and the Cavaliers headed to the locker room with a 10-2 advantage.

Virginia continued to apply pressure on the Hokie defense and tallied another score to open the second half. Rachel Culp (Sr., Kent, Ohio) notched Tech’s third and final goal of the contest at the 28:54 mark on a free position shot, but UVa would close out the match with eight unanswered goals en route to the 19-3 final score.

For the match, the Wahoos dominated most statistical categories, out-shooting the Hokies 40-12 while turning the ball over just 14 times compared to 27 turnovers by Tech. Ashley McCulloch led Virginia with four goals and four assists and eight other UVa players recorded multi-goal games during the contest.

Virginia Tech returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 as the Hokies serve as the hosts to James Madison in a non-conference match slated for 1 p.m.
