Hokies head to face No. 17 Ohio State


BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team will play a nonconference game at No. 17 Ohio State Sunday at noon.


The Hokies are coming off a 19-10 loss to No. 6 Notre Dame at home on Tuesday. Virginia Tech has an 8-6 edge in the series all-time but the Buckeyes defeated the Hokies 14-7 last season in Blacksburg on Feb. 15. Tech is 2-4 when playing in Columbus.

The Hokies are led by Tristan McGinley who has a team-high 25 points on 18 goals and seven assists. Kristine Loscalzo has a team-high 19 goals and three assists. Megahn Macera leads the team in three categories as she has 27 caused turnovers, 39 draw controls and 29 ground balls. Hannah Sieger has started all 10 games with 49 saves on the season and an 11.98 goals against average on 201 shots faced.

In their last game against Notre Dame, the Hokies only trailed the Fighting Irish 11-7 with 20:15 remaining but Notre Dame gained the ensuing draw control and scored just seconds later. The Irish outscored the Hokies 5-0 in less than six minutes of play to go up 16-7 and ultimately hold off the Hokies.

Sieger made eight saves in the cage. Jessi Thon had two goals and one assist to go along with three draw controls and a ground ball. Gracee Hendrix also tied for a team-high with two goals on two shots. Macera, Loscalzo, Tara Feehan, Zan Biedenharn and Paige Murray each scored once for Tech.


Ohio State is coming off an 11-5 victory over the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday. The Buckeyes dominated the game and outshot the Bearcats 30-15 while winning the draw control battle, 11-6.

Ohio State was picked fourth in the Big Ten Preseason. Three Buckeyes were selected to the 2016 Big Ten Players to Watch List.

Seniors Cian Dabrowski, Christine Easton and Rainey Hodgson were among 18 players named to the 2016 Big Ten Players to Watch list in the preseason.

The Buckeyes have outscored opponents by an average of 13.33-9.83. 52 of their 80 goals scored so far this season have been unassisted. Ohio State has a 89-61 advantage in draw controls but defensively they have only caused 26 turnovers.

Hodgson leads the team in total points thanks to 17 goals and 10 assists. Dabrowski is also tied with Hodgson with a team-high 17 goals to go along with seven assists. Molly Wood has a team-best 32 draw controls.

Katie Frederick has started every game in goal for Ohio State with 41 saves and a 9.36 goals against average. She’s faced 113 shots on the season.

Midfielder Bailey Parrott was named the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Feb. 17 after scoring two goals in a win over Detroit.
