Tribe outlast Hokies in OT, 10-9

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team lost a tight contest at William and Mary on Saturday afternoon in overtime, 10-9.

The Hokies, playing their last nonconference game of the season, jumped out to a 5-0 lead to start the game and led 9-5 with 21:40 left in the second half. William and Mary rallied to score the final four goals to send the game into overtime and got the game-winner with 3:06 left in the overtime frame.

The Hokies scored first and led for all but the last 7:42 of regulation time and never trailed until the game-winner.

Four Tech players scored two goals and the Hokies had a 20-17 advantage in shots on goal. William and Mary had a slight 26-25 edge in total shots. The two teams were even on ground balls with 12. Tech was a perfect 12-of-12 on clear attempts while the Tribe went 12-of-17. The Hokies also led in draw controls 12-9.

Meghan Macera scored two goals, had three draw controls and two ground balls. Kristine Loscalzo also scored twice and had two caused turnovers while Tristian McGinley had two goals and five draw controls.

Jessi Thon was the fourth player to score twice and Amanda Uliano also scored. Hannah Sieger made seven saves in the cage on the 17 shots she faced.

The Hokies scored five straight goals to open the game and led 5-0 with 18:10 left in the first half. Macera scored the first goal 5:03 into the game and Uliano capped off the run. The Tribe and Tech would trade the next four goals as the Hokies maintained their advantage at 7-2 with 12:08 left in the half.

The Tribe scored three straight goals to close the deficit to 7-5 at halftime. Tech opened the second half with goals from Thon and Loscalzo to make it 9-5 but the Hokies wouldn’t score for the remainder of the contest.

The Hokies will return to ACC play next Saturday at 1 p.m. at No. 6 Louisville.
