Some General Rules of Women's Lacrosse
Whistle: on any whistle, except after goals, everyone on the field must stop their momentum and stand in place until the whistle is blown again.
Out of bounds:There is a dotted line marking the size of the field- it is not a set line, just a guide line for the field. A player may cross over the line with the ball as long as no one is pressuring her. If the ball rolls or is thrown out of bounds, the official will try to blow the whistle as the ball crosses the dotted line.
Result: the ball is awarded to the player closest to the ball at the time of the whistle.
- if two players are equal distance from the ball when the whistle blows, the two players are lined up shoulder to shoulder one meter apart and the official throws a ball toward them (called a throw) and play continues.
Delay of game: is called when a player with the ball runs past the dotted line to avoid defensive players or tries to receive the ball past the dotted line to avoid being pressured while catching.
Result: the ball is awarded to the other team.
FOULS
Empty stick check: If a player A is checked by player B and player A does not have the ball.
Pushing / On the body foul: a defensive player pushes an offensive player too much
Dangerous check: a check that is toward the body or head of the ball carrier or a check that has a long wind up
Results: the attacker is awarded the ball and the defender is put four meters behind her
Fouls in the 8 meter: the attacker is awarded an 8 meter shot and the defender is put on the 12 meter
Following through into the crease: An attacked may not have any part of her stick break the plane of the crease.
Result: the goalkeeper is given the ball
Dangerous shot: When an attacker takes a shot that either hits the goalie directly in the face guard or might hit a defensive player
Result: the goalkeeper is awarded the ball
Or the defender is awarded the ball on the 8M
If the defender was in shooting space, then a throw occurs
Shooting space: a foul on a defender if the attacker is looking to drive to goal or in a position to shoot and the defender stands in the direct path of the goal and is not marking anyone or is more than one meter off of the ball carrier
Result: an immediate whistle to protect the defensive player. The attacker is awarded an 8 meter shot and the defense is put four meters behind the attacker.
FLAGS
Three seconds: a defender may only be inside the 8M area for three seconds unless she is at least one meter away from an attacker
Result: The official will throw a yellow flag into the air. The foul is not called immediately so not to take away any advantage the attack may have gained. A whistle is blown to stop play when that attack is not threat to score ( i.e. The ball is behind cage or on the ground ) or if a shot is taken. If a shot scores, then the flag is negated. If a shot is taken and not scored, then the closest attacker to the spot of the foul is awarded an 8 meter penalty shot and the closest defender to the spot of the foul is put four meters behind.
On a foul inside the 8 meter where the attack maintains possession and has an advantage, the official will throw the yellow flag instead of calling the foul immediately and taking a possible shot away from the attacker.
The whistle is blown once the ball is not in a scoring position (i.e. the ball is shot and saved, or the ball is on the ground.
The attacker closest to the spot of the foul (not necessarily the attacker fouled )is awarded an 8 meter and the closest defender (not necessarily the defender who committed the foul) is put four meters behind.
If the shot scores, then the goal stands and the flag is negated.
