BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Rolan Roberts hit an open 15-footer with 21 seconds left to give Virginia Tech the lead, then made the defensive stop with nine seconds remaining Saturday as the Hokies beat Dayton 58-55.

A pair of free throws with 1:14 left by Mark Ashman gave the Flyers (10-14, 5-9 Atlantic 10) a 55-54 lead, their first since early in the second half. Virginia Tech (11-13, 6-8) tried to counter by getting the ball to Brendan Dunlop.

Dayton put two defenders on Dunlop who passed to an open Roberts who hit the jumper near the foul line. Dayton then went to Edwin Young who drove the lane only to have his layup rejected by Roberts. Eddie Lucas got the loose ball and was fouled, making the two free throws for a 58-55 lead. Tony Stanley's 3-pointer at the buzzer for Dayton fell short.

Roberts finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and one block. Lucas had 19 points, 14 in the second half, Dunlop added 11 and Dennis Mims 10.

Ashman led the Flyers with 17 points and Tony Stanley had 10.

A layup by Mims with 9:36 left gave the Hokies a 49-40 lead, the largest of the game. The Flyers then outscored Tech 15-5 to take the lead on Ashman's free throws. Ashman had seven points in the run.
