Matthews in Dunk Contest
Hokie senior to compete at Final Four event

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech men's basketball forward Bryant Matthews will participate in the 16th Annual Mountain Dew College Basketball Slam Dunk and Three-Point Championship, to be held April 1, 2004 at the UTSA Convocation Center on the campus of the University of Texas - San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas.

A senior from Columbia, S.C., Matthews will be one of the 24 players taking part in the event. Matthews and seven other players will compete in the slam dunk competition. The players will be judged on originality, height and level of difficulty.

The event will be televised by ESPN on Thursday night at 9 p.m. The competition will be taped earlier in the evening for broadcast.

Matthews led the Hokies and the BIG EAST Conference in scoring as a senior, averaging 22.1 points per game. He was 11th nationally in scoring. He finished his career at Tech ninth on the school's all-time scoring list, sixth in steals and ninth in blocked shots. The Hokies finished the season 15-14 overall and were eighth in the BIG EAST.
