Hokies Open With 82-59 Win Against Mount St. Mary's
Four players score in double figures for the Hokies

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech used a balanced scoring attack and a second half run to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 82-59, in men's basketball at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday night. The game was the season opener for both schools.
The Hokies took the lead for good with 11:07 remaining in the first half on a dunk by senior center Mibindo Dongo (Kinshasa, Zaire). Tech led 38-30 at the half. Mount St. Mary's was able to cut the lead to 50-47 with 8:39 remaining on a three-point basket by senior guard Jerry Lloyd (Whitehall, Pa.), before the Hokies closed out the game on a 32-12 run.
Tech dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Mountaineers, 54-31. The Hokies shot 51.5% from the field, including 64.5% in the second half. Tech held Mount St. Mary's to 22 of 69 from the field, for 31.9%.
Four Hokies scored in double figures on the night, led by junior center Terry Taylor (Chesapeake, Va.), who scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in his first game as a Hokie. Senior forward Carlton Carter (Trenton, N.J.) added 16 points, including 14 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Carlos Dixon (Salisbury, N.C.) scored 15 points and dished out eight assists and sophomore forward Bryant Matthews (Columbia, S.C.) added 10 points and nine rebounds in the win.
Mount St. Mary's was led by sophomore forward Pat Atangana (Douala, Cameroon) with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Lloyd added 13 points for the Mountaineers.
Virginia Tech returns to action on Tuseday night, as the Hokies host Rhode Island at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
