Men's Basketball Drops Close Contest to West Virginia

Late 3-pointer puts Mountaineers on top.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Elton Scott hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left and set up the winning score with a steal on the ensuing inbound pass as West Virginia slipped past Virginia Tech 69-68 at the WVU Coliseum Saturday night.

Scott, a 6-foot-6 senior forward, led the Mountaineers (5-5) with 20 points.

After his 3-pointer, Scott tipped Rolan Roberts' inbound pass to Jarett Kearse. Kearse missed a 3-pointer, but teammate Tom Beynon came up with a long rebound. Scott tried another 3-pointer which fell short, but into the hands of Marcus Goree, who converted a layup with five seconds to play.

Eddie Lucas, who led Tech (3-4) with 18 points, tried a 3-pointer with three seconds left, but WVU's Brooks Berry blocked the ball and held on as time expired.

The Mountaineers trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half when Brendan Dunlop's 3-pointer gave the Hokies a 61-51 lead with 3:01 to play. The Mountaineers twice cut the deficit to three before the final 19 seconds.

Goree and Berry each finished with 18 points. Berry was 4-of-7 from 3-point range, and scored 14 of his points in the second half.p> Lucas scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, shooting 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

After falling behind 6-0 in the early minutes, the Mountaineers rallied to take a 29-23 halftime lead. Virginia Tech went more than eight minutes without a basket during a 13-0 WVU run in the first half. Berry hit a jumper to give West Virginia a 7-6 lead at the 15:38 mark and the Mountaineers led by as many seven twice.

Both teams shot just over 46 percent from the field. The Hokies missed nine of 20 free throws, with several key misses in the last few minutes.
