January 15, 2007
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's basketball team has entered both national polls, for the week ending Jan. 14, 2007. Virginia Tech is ranked 23rd in the AP poll, voted on by members of the national media. The Hokies are 25th in the ESPN/USA Today poll, which is selected by a panel of coaches from across the country.
This marks the first time the Hokies have been ranked in the AP poll since the final poll of the 1995-96 season. The Hokies finished that season ranked 22nd nationally after falling to eventual national champion Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies are 13-4 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference action. Tech defeated the then number-five ranked Duke Blue Devils on Jan. 6 and the then number-one ranked North Carolina Tar Heels on Jan. 13. The Hokies are 2-0 against nationally-ranked teams this season.
Virginia Tech returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m., at Florida State. The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m., against Maryland, which is ranked 22nd in the current ESPN/USA Today coaches poll.
