January 29, 2007
Virginia Tech guard Zabian Dowdell has been named the national player of the week for the week ending Jan. 28, 2007 by ESPN's Dick Vitale. Dowdell scored 30 points in the win at Miami on Tuesday night and 23 points in the win at Georgia Tech on Sunday.
DICKIE V'S WEEKLY AWARDS
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Zabian Dowdell, Virginia Tech
Seth Greenberg has to be proud of his guards, and Dowdell had a pair of solid performances in Hokie victories. He hit seven-of-10 shots from the floor, finishing with 30 points against Miami. Dowdell hit all eight free throw attempts, scored 23 points and dished out eight assists at Georgia Tech. In the two games he had a total of 13 assists and just one turnover. TEAM OF THE WEEK: North Carolina
It is not easy to win on the road in the ACC, yet the Tar Heels did it at Wake Forest. Then came the real show, a big-time blowout of Arizona on the road. Roy Williams' squad beat the Wildcats despite the absence of Brandan Wright and Marcus Ginyard (illness). I picked the Tar Heels to win the national championship before the season and there is no reason to change that prediction now. This club can run, its plays unselfish basketball and it is reaching its potential. COACH OF THE WEEK: Bo Ryan, Wisconsin
The Badgers have won 17 in a row, the nation's longest current win streak. Wisconsin is off to a school-record 21-1 start. One of the key reasons is coach Bo Ryan, who is a flat-out winner. His squad won a pair of games by double figures, with a home win over Michigan and a road victory at Iowa. DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK: Kevin Durant, Texas
He continues to dominate in the Big 12. He had 26 points and 15 rebounds against Nebraska and a 34-point, nine-rebound effort against Baylor. Durant shot 19-of-36 from the floor in those two wins. SHOCK OF THE WEEK: North Carolina over Arizona (margin)
It wasn't the fact that the Tar Heels got to the winner's circle. It was the margin. Arizona's 28-point loss (92-64) was the worst home defeat since Lute Olson took over the Wildcats. Arizona hit just one of 23 trifectas.
