FARMVILLE, Va. - Virginia Tech head men's basketball coach Seth Greenberg has been named the Virginia Men's Basketball Coach of the Year, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID). Greenberg led the Hokies to a 21-14 overall record, as the Hokies advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. The Hokies finished fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 9-7 league mark. He was also named the 2008 ACC Coach of the Year, as selected by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association. The Hokies had been picked 10th in the ACC pre-season poll with a team that featured six scholarship freshmen players. Tech received a bye in the first round of the 2008 ACC Tournament and advanced to the semifinals of the event. Three Hokie players were named to the 2007-08 University Division Virginia All-State Men's Basketball Team, also selected by VaSID. A.D. Vassallo, a junior guard from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, was named to the first team. He led the Hokies in scoring, with 16.9 points per game and recorded a career-high 77 assists. He was named to second-team All-ACC. Deron Washington, a senior forward from New Orleans, La., was named to the VaSID second team. He was second on the team in scoring, at 13.1 points per game and recorded a career-high 80 assists. He was an honorable mention All-ACC selection and also an honorable mention ACC All-Defensive team selection. Jeff Allen, a freshman forward from Washington, D.C., received an honorable mention to the VaSID team. The only freshman named to any of the three teams, he was third on the team in scoring, at 11.8 ppg and led the team in rebounding, blocked shots and steals. He was named to the ACC All-Freshman team and was honorable mention ACC All-Defensive team. Joining Greenberg as major award winners by VaSID are Sean Singletary of Virginia, who was named the Player of the Year and Kevin Anderson of Richmond, who was named the Rookie of the Year.
