Chaney transfers to Virginia Tech
Sophomore forward to become eligible for the 2010-11 season
May 18, 2009

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech athletics department has announced that Allan Chaney has accepted an offer of athletic grant-in-aid and will join the Hokie basketball program.

Chaney, a sophomore from Baltimore, Md., comes to Virginia Tech after playing as a freshman at the University of Florida. Prior to his transfer, Chaney played in 23 games this year, starting twice. He averaged 3.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 9.8 minutes per game. He missed nine games with a sprained foot

“I’m extremely excited that Allan Chaney has decided to join our program,” head coach Seth Greenberg said. “He’s a versatile forward with both perimeter and post-up skills. Having come from the University of Florida, he truly understands what it takes to compete at the very highest level. We expect him to be an immediate contributor once he gains his eligibility.”

Originally from Baltimore, Chaney played high school basketball at New London High School in New London, Conn., where he averaged 26.0 points and 15.0 rebounds per game as a senior. He was rated a four-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com and in the ESPN Top-100 and was named the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year for 2007-08. He was the Player of the Year by both the New London Day and the Norwich Bulletin and an All-State selection his senior year by the Hartford Courant and New Haven Register.

Due to NCAA regulations, Chaney will have to sit-out the 2009-10 season, but will have three seasons of eligibility beginning the 2010-11 season. He will be allowed to practice with the team while redshirting this season.
