Hokies sign two players for the 2010-11 hoops season
Eddie and Garland sign national letters of intent
November 11, 2009

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men’s basketball program has announced the signing of two players to national letters of intent during the fall early signing period. Both players will join the program for the 2010-11 academic year. Jarell Eddie, a 6-7, 209 lbs., wing and Tyrone Garland, a 6-1, 170 lbs., guard, will join the team next fall.

“With these two commitments, we are fulfilling our needs for the future,” head coach Seth Greenberg said. “Both players have the ability to make shots and make plays. They both reflect the work ethic, toughness and character we are looking for in players at Virginia Tech.”

Eddie is from Charlotte, N.C., where he plays for head coach Glen Taylor at the Cannon School in Concord, N.C. He has scored more than 2,000 points in his varsity career and led the Cougars to a co-conference championship in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association last season. He averaged 25 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior. He is a two-time All-State selection. He was named first team All-Region in 2009 by the Charlotte Observer. As a sophomore, he averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and three assists per game. Eddie is ranked #63 nationally and as the #12 small forward in the Class of 2010 by Rivals.com and the #15 small forward nationally by Scout.com. Hoop Scoop has Eddie listed as a 12th team All-America selection.

“Jarell Eddie is a player that has been committed to Virginia Tech for the last two years and is a special talent,” Greenberg said. “He has legitimate size, shoots the ball with range, is physically strong and is as complete a player and person as we have recruited here. He is the type of wing player who can score in a number of different ways, he rebounds his position very well and his potential is unlimited.”

Tyrone Garland is a senior at John Bartram High School in Philadelphia, Pa., where he plays for head coach James Brown. Last season as a junior, he was a first team All-City selection by the Philadelphia Daily News and a first team All-State selection in Class AAAA by the Associated Press. Garland was the leading scorer in Philadelphia and the Philly Public League as a junior, averaging 28.9 points per game. He is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and is the #26 point guard nationally by Scout.com.

“Tyrone is a typical Philly guard,” Greenberg said. “He has a great feel for the game. He can score and make plays for his teammates. He is terriffic off the dribble and shoots the ball with range. He is extremely competitive and is a young, rising senior. He is the type of player we have been able to win with here at Virginia Tech.”

The Hokies open the 2009-10 season on Sunday, Nov. 15, against Brown at 4 p.m., in Cassell Coliseum. This will be an opening round game in the 2009 Philly Hoop Group Classic.
