NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was selected 21st in the AP preseason Top 25 poll, released Thursday afternoon. The AP writers’ poll is voted on by a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters.
This marks the Hokies’ first appearance in the writers’ poll since the first week of March in 2007. Tech is one of three ACC schools in the poll, led by Duke at No. 1 and North Carolina at No. 8. Virginia Tech opponents Kansas State and Purdue are No. 3 and No. 14, respectively.
This is the Hokies’ first appearance in the AP preseason Top 25 since the 1995-96 season, when Tech, the defending 1995 NIT Champions, was ranked No. 22. This is the highest the Hokies have been ranked in the AP preseason Top 25 since the 1984-85 season, when Tech entered the season ranked No. 15. The Hokies are ranked No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches preseason poll.
The Hokies open the season on Nov. 12 against Campbell in Cassell Coliseum. Tip-off is set at 7:30 p.m.
