Green named ACC Player of the Week
Sophomore guard earns honor for first time

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech guard Erick Green has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, for the week ending Jan. 23, 2011. The ACC honors are voted on by a committee of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Green, a sophomore from Winchester, Va., averaged 19.0 points, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals as the Hokies won twice during the week. In Thursday’s 74-57 win at Maryland, Green scored a career-high 24 points and added a game-high four steals in 37 minutes of action. On Saturday, Green scored 14 points and led the Hokies with five assists in a 70-52 win over Longwood.

This is the third time this season that a Virginia Tech player has earned this honor, following Jeff Allen on Jan. 9 and Malcolm Delaney on Nov. 29. This marks the first time in Green’s career that he has garnered this award. North Carolina’s Reggie Bullock was selected the ACC Rookie of the Week.

Green currently leads the ACC in assist/turnover ratio. He has scored in double figures in all 10 games that he has started this season and is averaging 10.6 points per game on the year.

The Hokies return to action on Tuesday night, as they travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech. The game is set for a 9 p.m. tip-off on regional sports network.
