Virginia Tech has four student-athletes and head coach Jay Hardwick set to tee off Thursday morning at 2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia at the 7,127 yards, par 72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. The championship will be played Thursday-Sunday, July 15-18.
The SunTrust State Open boasts a field of professionals and amateurs from the Commonwealth. PGA Professional Faber Jamerson of Appomattox shot a final round 2-under-par 70 to cruise to win last year’s SunTrust State Open of Virginia at Independence Golf Club.
Garland Green, a rising senior from Tazewell, Virginia, was fully exempt due to being a semifinalist at the 2009 VSGA Amateur Championship. Green was the No. 4-ranked golfer in the season-ending 2009 VSGA player rankings. Also earning full exemption entering the event is Hardwick, who won the 2009 Senior Open of Virginia last September.
Joining Green and Hardwick in the event, is Marshall Bailey, a rising senior from Fincastle, Aaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem and Mikey Moyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville. Moyers’ father, Mike, is also competing in the tournament. He was tied for low senior professional at the 2009 SunTrust State Open of Virginia.
The SunTrust State Open of Virginia is a 72-hole, stroke play event with the field limited to 168 golfers (80 eligible Virginia PGA members and apprentices, 80 eligible amateurs, the defending champion and seven Open qualifiers). The field will be cut to the low 70 players and ties following the completion of 36 holes.
