Five current and future Virginia Tech golfers all showed well on Sunday in the final round of the 2010 SunTrust State Open of Virginia at the 7,127 yards, par 72 Independence Golf Club in Midlothian.
All five golfers finished under-par for the event, led by rising senior Garland Green of Tazewell, who finished tied for 12th place with a four-round total of eight-under-par 280. He fired the best round of Sunday with a seven-under-par 65. Green’s final round included seven birdies and an eagle two on the 331-yard, par four 12th hole.
Evan Beck, an amateur from Virginia Beach who is a rising sophomore at Wake Forest, won the title with a 20-under-par 268, one stroke ahead of Cameron Yancey of Blackstone. Beck’s 20-under-par total equals the record for the State Open.
Marshall Bailey, a rising senior from Fincastle, finished in 16th place at 281. Mikey Moyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville, finished in 23rd place at 284. Bryce Chalkley, an incoming freshman from Richmond, shot a four-round total of 286 and Aaron Eckstein, a rising senior from Salem, finished in a tie for 32nd place at 287.
