Chalkey, Moyers advance to quarterfinals at State Am
The Notebook

Virginia Tech golfers Bryce Chalkley and Mikey Moyers won two matches each on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 100th Virginia State Golf Association Amateur Championship being played at The Homestead’s Cascades Course.

Chalkey, the second seed in match play and a rising senior for the Hokies, defeated Dylan Jensen of Ridgeway, 3 & 2 in the first round. Chalkley only lost one hole in his first round match. In the second round, Chalkley won his match with a commanding 6 & 5 victory over Matt Brantingham of Richmond. Chalkley won seven of the 13 holes in the match.

Moyers, the fourth seed in match play, won his opening round match one up over Connor Walters of Salem. Moyers was one up after the eighth hole and stayed in that position until Walters squared the match on the 15th hole. Moyers birdied the par-5 16th hole and held on for the win. In the second round, Moyers was two up after the 12th hole, but Weston Eklund of Charlottesville and Radford University, won the 13th and 14th hole to square the match. Moyers won the 18th hole with a par and took the match, one up.

On Friday morning, Chalkley will face Ji Soo Park of Clifton and the University of Virginia at 8:20 a.m. Moyers will face Evan Beck of Virginia Beach at 8:10 a.m. Beck and Moyers have met on the course before, as Beck has just completed his collegiate career at Wake Forest.
