Hokies Finish Second at Matlock
Krusoe fourth individually
February 19, 2002

Lakeland, Fla. -- Virginia Tech shot the low round of the day, a two-under-par 286, and finished second in the Matlock Invitational at the 7,065 yard, par-72 Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Fla., Tuesday afternoon.

Tulsa, which won the team title by two strokes over Virginia Tech, entered the final round with an 11-stroke lead over the Hokies, but Tech closed the margin to two strokes in the final round. Tech's final round 286 was the second-lowest round of the tournament, trailing only Colorado's opening round 284.

Senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) shot the only final round in the 60s, a four-under-par 68 and finished tied for fourth place with a three-round total of two-under-par 214. Steve Sokol of Florida Southern won the event with a three-round, six-under-par total of 210.

Junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for ninth place after shooting a one-under-par 71 for a three-round total of two-over-par 218. Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) and junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) tied for 23rd place at seven-over-par 223. Wagner shot 74-75-74=223 and McKeel shot 74-76-73=223. Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) tied for 27th with a nine-over-par 225 (76-73-76).

Tulsa won the event with a nine-over-par 873, two strokes ahead of the Hokies at 875. Colorado was third at 878 and Alabama was fourth at 880. Missouri rounded out the top five at 883. Host and defending champion Florida Southern finished sixth at 891.

This was the first tournament of the spring for the Hokies, who finished fourth in last season's Matlock Invitational. Tech returns to action on Monday, March 4, as it travels to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to compete in the Coastal Carolina/Grand Dunes Invitational at the Grand Dunes Golf Resort.
