Hokies Finish Second at Coastal Carolina

    MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a final round 284 and finished in second place with a three-round total of 875 in the Coastal Carolina Men's Golf Invitational at the 6,950 yard, par-72 TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon.

    Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) won the individual title with a three-round total of 213. He shot a final round 67, the low round of the tournament and the only round under 70.

    Senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) finished in sixth place at 219, six strokes behind de Jonge. Junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) finished tied for 15th place, at 223, including a final round 72. Redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and freshman Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) tied for 20th place at 225. Kraner shot a final round, one-under-par 71.

    Redshirt junior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.), who competed as an individual in the event, finished tied for 25th, at 227. He tied Tyler McGhie of host Coastal Carolina, as the low individual competitor.

    Arkansas shot a final round 282 and defeated the Hokies by two strokes, at 873. Central Florida was third, five strokes behind Tech at 880 and day one leader UNC Wilmington finished fourth at 891. VCU rounded out the top five at 907.

    Tech returns to action this weekend, as they travel to Huntersville, N.C. to compete in the Birkdale Collegiate Invitational.
