Hokies Lead at Birkdale

    Huntersville, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot an opening round 290 and leads the Birkdale Collegiate Classic at the 7,013 yard, par-72 Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville, N.C. The event, originallly scheduled for 54 holes, is being shortened to 36 holes due to heavy rain on Saturday. The final round will be played on Sunday morning.

    Seniors Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) and Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 10th place, after each shot even-par 72 on Saturday. Geoffrey Harris of Old Dominion leads the tournament after shooting an opening round 67.

    Redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and freshman Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) are tied for 17th place at 73. Junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 33rd following a 75.

    The Hokies enter the final round with a two stroke lead over Old Dominion and North Carolina, who shot 292 in the first round. Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern are tied for fourth at 293 and East Carolina is sixth at 294. UNC Wilmington is seventh at 295, one stroke better than Missouri, at 296. UNC Greensboro and Virginia round out the top 10 at 298.

    Tech travels to Greenville, S.C., next weekend, to play in the Furman Intercollegiate.
