Hokies Fifth After Day One at Aiken

    Aiken, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a two-round, 10-over-par 578 and is in fifth place at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-71, 6,380 Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. on Monday.

    Sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) and redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) are tied for sixth place with identical rounds of 72 and 69 for a first-day total of one-under-par 141. Erik Johansen of South Carolina leads the event at 135, as he was the only player under 70 in each round.

    Senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 23rd at 146 and freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 42nd at 150. Freshman Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) is in 61st place at 154.

    Sophomore Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) is playing the tournament as an individual and is tied for 28th at 147. He is the low scorer among the five individuals playing the event.

    South Carolina leads the tournament with a two-round total of nine-under-par 559. 12 strokes better than Coastal Carolina. Host USC-Aiken is third at 572 and Memphis is fourth at 577, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Purdue, Furman, Maryland, South Florida and the College of Charleston round out the top ten in the 14 team tournament.

    Tech shot five-over-par 289 in each of the two rounds played on Monday and the Hokies were fifth after the morning round. The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday.

    Next on the schedule for the Hokies is the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. on March 26 and 28. Tech is the three-time defending champion in that event.
