Hokies Win Furman Intercollegiate
Stinnett ties for 8th to lead Tech
March 25, 2001

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Virginia Tech fired a final round 283 to finish with an even-par 864 to win the Furman Intercollegiate Sunday. The event, one of the oldest and most prestigious in collegiate golf, was played at the Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.

Hokie Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) shot a final-round 69 for a three-day 215 and tied for eighth place. Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 71 and finished in 10th place with a 216. Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Oh.) also shot a 71 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 12th place, with a 218. Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) shot a 75 and finished with a 219 in 14th place and Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) shot a final round 72 to finish in a tie for 21st place with a 222.

The win breaks the Virginia Tech school-record for victories in a season. This is Tech's first win of the spring, following three victories and three second place finishes in the fall season. The Hokies' final round of 283 was the lowest round of the day and the team made up a six-stroke deficit in the final round for the four-stroke victory. Tech is currently ranked 12th nationally in the Mastercard rankings.

Host Furman finished second with an 868. Francis Marion and Rhode Island finished in a tie for third place, each shooting an 878 and UNC Greensboro finished fifth, with an 880.

Two Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Eric Reynolds (Lexington, Va.) shot an 82 and finished tied for 87th with a 236 and Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) shot an 82, good for a tie for 101st place with a 246.

The Hokies return to action on April 13 and 14 at the Wofford Invitational at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
