Kraner ties for eighth overall

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Virginia Tech shot a final round 301 and finished in sixth place at the 36th annual Furman Intercollegiate at the 6,800-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C. Tech finished with a three-day total of 884.

Junior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) shot a two-over-par 74 on Sunday and tied for eighth place at 216. Daniel Sloan of Wofford shot a three-round total of 210 and won a one-hole playoff against Scott Brown of USC Aiken to claim medalist honors.

Redshirt senior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and sophomore Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) each shot 221 and tied for 23rd place. Freshman Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 83rd place at 232 and junior Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) tied for 98th at 236.

Three Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Freshman Will Oldham (Richmond, Va.) finished tied for 12th place at 218 and sophomore Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) tied for 50th at 226. Freshman Chad Fultz (Staunton, Va.) tied for 66th at 228. Oldham's total of 218 was the low score among the 11 individuals playing in the event.

Second round leader USC Aiken held on to win the event with a three-round total of one-over-par 865, three strokes better than UNC Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. UNC Greensboro was fourth at 872 and Charleston Southern was fifth at 882, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Furman, Wofford, Elon and the Furman "B" team rounded out the top 10

The 20-team tournament featured 18 holes each day over the three-day event. The Hokies return to action next weekend, as they travel to Augusta, Ga., for the Augusta State Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
