Wise tied for fourth individually
March 8, 2004 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a first round 13-over-par 301 and is in fifth place at the General Jim Hackler Invitational at the par-72, 6,950 TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. on Monday. Play was suspended during the second round due to darkness. Redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) is tied for fourth individually, with an opening-round one-under-par 71. Michael Putnam of Pepperdine, Kevin O'Connell of Virginia and Bill Haas of Wake Forest are tied for the lead at 70, one stroke ahead of Wise. Senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 10th, at one-over-par 73 and sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) is tied for 46th at 77. Sophomore Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) is tied for 76th at 80 and freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 89th place at 83. Pepperdine leads the event at four-over-par 292, five strokes ahead of Wake Forest. Virginia and East Tennessee State are tied for third at 299, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Central Florida, Arkansas, Furman, Louisville and Kansas State round out the top 10 in the 19 team field. The second round will be completed Tuesday morning, followed by the final round. Next on the schedule for the Hokies is the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. on March 15 and 16.
