Stinnett ties for third, Wise aces #8

Cary, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a final round 295 on route to a three-round total of 884 and finished 14th at the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,867 Macgregor Downs Country Club in Cary, N.C. on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) shot a final round one-under-par 71 and finished tied for third place with a two-day total of six-under-par 210. Bill Haas of Wake Forest won medalist honors with a three-round total of 15-under-par 201.

Redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) also shot a final round 71 and finished tied for 37th at 222. Wise finished the day strong, as he recorded a hole-in-one on the par-three eighth hole (his 17th hole of the round). He hit an eight iron from 166 yards for the ace.

Sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) tied for 43rd at 223 and redshirt senior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) are finished in 73rd place at 231. Freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) tied for 77th place at 234.

Duke shot a final round 280 and won the event with a three-round total of 19-under-par 845, 15 strokes better than runner-up Kansas, which led after the first two rounds. Minnesota was third at 862, host North Carolina State was fourth at 867 and SMU was fifth at 870. Wake Forest, Tennessee, Tulsa, North Carolina and East Tennessee State rounded out the top 10 in the 15 team event. The Hokies finished 14th at 884, one stroke behind Georgia Southern in 13th place and five strokes ahead of 15th place Virginia.

Next up for the Hokies is the 2004 BIG EAST Conference Championship at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. on April 24-25.
