Tech Announces Golf Signee
Hummel signs to play for the Hokies
April 11, 2002 BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech Golf Coach Jay Hardwick has announced the signing of Patrick Hummel to a national letter of intent for the 2002-03 academic year. Hummel attends Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, Va., where he was a two-time All-State selection, two-time Beach District Player of the Year and the 2000 VHSL State AAA Champion. Kellam High School was the VHSL Class AAA runner-up in each of the last two seasons. "Patrick's success on the state and national level should make him a player that we can count on immediately," Hardwick said. "He has an excellent record and should have an outstanding career at Virginia Tech." Hummel was a first team all-district selection as a junior and senior and won the James G. Parke Memorial Award for outstanding Metro scholastic golfer from the Norfolk Sports Club in 2001. In 2001 he qualified for the Virginia State Amateur and finished 3rd in the Virginia State Junior Championship. His opening-round 66 shared the first-round lead at the prestigious Eastern Amateur in Portsmouth, Va. He also was the runner-up at the 1999 Doral Publix Junior Championship in Miami, Fla.
