Hokies Ninth at Raleigh

    RALEIGH, N.C. -- Virginia Tech recorded a two-round total of 571 and is in ninth place at The Intercollegiate at the 6,782 yard, par-71 Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday afternoon.

    The event features one of the strongest fields of the season. Six of the top 25 teams in the nation are competing in this tournament. The Hokies shot an opening round even-par 284 and followed that with a 287 second round.

    Freshman Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) is tied for third place after shooting a two-round total of three-under-par 139. Chris Noel of Tulsa leads the event at 135, four strokes ahead of Kraner.

    Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 13th place, after shooting a one-under-par 141 on Saturday. Redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) is tied for 39th place at 145. Junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 50th following a 147 and senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) is tied for 59th place at 148.

    Co-host North Carolina leads the tournament, after shooting a 560 on Saturday, one stroke ahead of Tulsa at 561. SMU is third at 564 and Wake Forest is fourth at 566. Tennessee and co-host North Carolina State are tied for fifth at 569 and Georgia Southern and defending national champion Minnesota are tied for seventh at 570, one stroke ahead of the Hokies.

    The final round of the tournament will be played Sunday morning. Tech travels to the 2003 BIG EAST Conference Championship on April 21-22 at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
