Golf Finishes Second At A-10 Championship

    CANONSBURG, Pa. - Virginia Tech's Matt Hollerbach finished in second place to lead the Hokies to a second-place team finish at the Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship at the Southpointe Golf Club.

    Rhode Island ended the 54-hole tournament 14-over par to win the team title, 12 strokes ahead of the Hokies. After shooting a three-under 285 yesterday, Rhode Island closed out the tournament with a two-over 290 to end with a team score of 878. The Hokies were 26-over par for the championship with a score of 890. Duquesne finished third with a 49-over par 913. Temple was fourth with a 916, while George Washington and Xavier tied for fifth with a score of 923. Dayton (932), St. Bonaventure (956), St. Joseph's (972), Fordham (979) and La Salle (1085) rounded out the field.

    Hollerbach, a freshman, earned Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie honors with a three-over par 219 to finish second. The Hokies' Brendon de Jonge placed third, one stroke behind Hollerbach. Other Hokie finishers included Johnson Wagner (14th), Eric Reynolds (18th) and Brian Krusoe (24th).

    The Hokies will return to action on April 28-29 when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to compete in the Wofford Invitational.
