Hokies Tied for 13th After Round One at NCAA Golf

    LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Virginia Tech is tied for 13th place after the opening round of the 2002 NCAA Golf Central Regional at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas on Thursday afternoon. The Hokies finished the round fired a total of eight-over-par 296.

    The top performance individually for Tech was Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe). The junior shot a one-under-par 71 and was the only Hokie under par in the opening round. De Jonge, tied for 13th place individually, is playing with a fractured rib suffered two weeks ago.

    Junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) is tied for 43rd place after shooting a two-over-par 74. Senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Oh.) is tied for 57th place with a three-over-par 75. Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) and sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) are tied for 67th after rounds of four-over-par 76.

    Oklahoma State is in first place after shooting an opening round one-under-par 287. The Cowboys are the only team in the tournament to break par on day one. Kansas, Oklahoma and TCU are tied for second at 289 and Purdue is in fifth at 290. The top 10 teams advance to the NCAA Golf Championship in Columbus, Ohio in two weeks. The Hokies are just three strokes out of 10th place.

    Tech tees off in the second round at 7:30 p.m. from the first tee. The weather forecast in Central Arkansas is for thunderstorms on Friday.
