Golf to Play in NCAA East Regional

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech has been selected to participate in the 2001 NCAA East Regional Golf Tournament at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club Green Course in Williamsburg, Va. The tournament will take place May 17-19.

Tech enters the 27-team field as the fifth seed from the NCAA District 3 North. The Hokies gained an automatic berth into the field with their victory in the 2001 BIG EAST Conference Golf Championship at Metacomet Country Club in East Providence, R.I. on April 29. Tech has won its last three tournaments of the season and a school-record six tournaments this season.

"We are very proud of what the team's has accomplished this season by winning six tournaments and the conference championship," Virginia Tech head coach Jay Hardwick said. "We look forward to the opportunity to compete for the NCAA Championship."

Tech is ranked 11th nationally in the poll, 23rd in the Mastercard poll and 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll. The Hokies are sixth in the NCAA District III ratings. The top 10 teams from each of the three regionals advance to the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, to be held at the Duke University Golf Club May 31- June 3.
