BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech opens the 2003-04 golf season this weekend, as the Hokies travel to The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn., to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges.

The 17-team event will feature one of the top fields in collegiate golf. Defending national champion Clemson is one of 11 teams in the field to advance to the 2003 NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.

The Hokies return six players from last season's team, including three players who competed in the NCAA East Regional at Auburn, Ala. Senior Ryan Stinnett, junior Scott Wise and sophomore Joel Kraner were in the lineup as the Hokies won their third consecutive BIG EAST Conference Golf Championship in April. Also returning to this season's team are senior Matt Hollerbach, sophomore Sam Nicholson and redshirt freshman Patrick Hummel.

Joining them this season are freshmen Carl Wakely, Ryan Sypniewski and Ryan Hillstrom. Wakely and Sypniewski will join Stinnett, Wise and Kraner in the line-up at The Ridges this weekend.

"We are looking forward to the beginning of the season and the challenges it brings," head coach Jay Hardwick said. "We are very excited to be hosting The Preview this Fall and the 2004 NCAA Championship next Spring. The 2003-04 tournament schedule is our best ever and includes four of the top tournaments in college golf. Our team is a strong mix of experience and new, young talent. From the beginning this weekend at The Ridges Intercollegiate through the championship events in the Spring, this will be an exciting year for Virginia Tech Golf."
