Wagner shot a final round four-under-par 66 on August 23 to win the 2001 Metropolitan Open at the Bethpage State Park's Black Course in Farmington, N.Y. Former winners of the Metropolitan Open include golf hall-of-famers Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazan, Walter Hagen and Tommy Armour. The Black Course at Bethpage State Park will be the site of the 2002 U.S. Open.

The Hokies, currently ranked 10th nationally, completed the 2000-01 season in the spring with an eighth place finish at the NCAA Division I Golf Championship at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Wagner finished tied for 34th, individually.
