Hokies Fifth After Day One at Kiawah Island

    KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Virginia Tech fired a two-round total of 595 and is in fifth place entering Tuesday's final round of the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the 7,061 yard, par-72 Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.

    Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for sixth place individually, with a two-round total of 146. Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker leads the tournament at 140, six strokes ahead of de Jonge. Junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 25th at 149 and senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) is tied for 32nd at 151. Freshman Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.), playing in his first collegiate tournament, is tied for 37th at 152 and redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Roanoke, Va.) is tied for 43rd at 154.

    Tournament host and defending champion College of Charleston leads the event at 581, nine strokes ahead of second place Mississippi. Alabama and Vanderbilt are tied for third at 594, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Tech led the event by one stroke after the morning's first round.

    The final round of the tournament will be played Tuesday morning. The Hokies complete this busy first week of the season this weekend, as they travel to the Bank of Tennessee/The Ridges Intercollegiate at The Ridges Golf Club in Johnson City, Tenn. on Saturday and Sunday.
