Golf Team Wins VCU Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech golf team shot a two-over-par 290 on the final day to claim the 2000 VCU East Regional Fall Preview championship Tuesday afternoon. The Hokies finished six strokes ahead of the College of Charleston on the 6,738-yard, par-72 Ford's Colony Marsh Hawk course.

Brendon De Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) claimed the individual overall title by defeating Georgia Southern's Travis Mobley on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff. The sophomore shot rounds of 70 and 72 en route to a two-under-par 142.

Johnson Wagner (71-72) and Brian Krusoe (69-74) tied for third with a two-round total of 143. Chris McKeel shot a 149 (77-72) for 31st place and Ryan Stinett placed 73rd with a 154 (77-77).

This is the Hokies' second team victory in five fall tournaments and the team has yet to finish lower than second in any of its outings.

Virginia Tech will next compete in the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate Invitational held at the SeaScape Golf Club in Nags Head, N.C., on Oct. 30 and 31.
