The Team is Currently in Ninth Place
    October 27, 1999

KITTY HAWK, N.C. -- Freshman Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) of the Virginia Tech golf team is tied for 11th place after the first round of the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate Invitational in Kitty Hawk, N.C. The team is currently in ninth place.

McKeel shot a 73 on the par 72, 6,469-yard layout of the SeaScape Golf Course. This is the first time that McKeel, playing in his home state, has led the Hokies in scoring during any tournament this year. Senior David Lipes (Midlothian, Va.), competing in only his second tournament of the year, also had an impressive first round. He fired a 76 and is currently in a tie for 35th place.

Virginia Tech used a balanced attack to shoot a team score of 304. They are 20 strokes off the leader Elon, who is at 284 after the first 18 holes. The host team Old Dominion is in second place at 290, six strokes off the lead.

Three individuals are tied for the lead at two-under-par after the first round. Terry Slater and Todd Grassi of Elon along with Stephen Richards of ODU all shot 70. The most amazing event was that there were two hole-in-ones on the day. Phil Worthington of Bethune-Cookman holed his ball on the par 3, 165-yard seventh hole and Matt Stroud of Georgia Southern carded a hole-in-one on the par 3, 132-yard thirteenth hole.

The final round of competition will be held on Tuesday.
