October 8, 2004 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a six-over-par 294 in the opening round and is in seventh place at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational at the par-72, 7,199 yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday. Junior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) leads the Hokies and is tied for 13th at even-par 72. Adam Howell of East Carolina shot a six-under-par 66 to take the lead after the first round. Redshirt senior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) is tied for 20th overall after a 73 and freshman Chad Fultz (Staunton, Va.) is tied for 24th at 74. Sophomore Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 26th place at 75 and junior Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) is tied for 41st at 79. Virginia leads the tournament after shooting an opening round, five-under-par 283. Georgia Southern is second at 285 and host North Carolina is third at even-par 288. UNC Charlotte is fourth at 289, one stroke ahead of Tulsa. East Tennessee State is sixth at 293, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. UNC Wilmington and East Carolina round out the nine team field at 295 and 298, respectively. The 54-hole tournament will continue with 18 holes on Saturday and conclude with a final 18 holes on Sunday afternoon.
