Hokies Finish Fifth at Adams Cup

Newport, R.I. -- Virginia Tech fired a final round 292 on Wednesday afternoon and finished fifth at the Adams Cup of Newport golf tournament in Newport, R.I. The Hokies finished seven strokes behind first-place Michigan State.

Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 215 and finished tied for sixth in the event, five strokes behind medalist Kasper Jorgenson of Georgia State. De Jonge's second-round 67 was the low round of the tournament and is the low round for the Hokies this fall.

Senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) finished tied for 16th place with a 219 and junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) finished tied for 19th at 220. Redshirt junior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) tied for 38th place at 226 and redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Roanoke, Va.) tied for 86th at 242.

The Hokies led after the first two rounds and shot its low round of the tournament, a 292, in the final round of the event. Michigan State won the event at 873, three strokes better than runner-up Texas A&M. Georgia and Kentucky tied for third at 879, one stroke ahead of Tech. East Tennessee State, Louisville, Georgia State, host Rhode Island and Mississippi rounded out the top 10.

The second round of the tournament began Tuesday afternoon, but was suspended due to darkness and completed this morning. The suspended second round was played at the 6,735 yard, par-70 Newport National Golf Club Orchard Course and the third round was played at the 6,903 yard, par-72 Newport Country Club.

The Hokies return to action next week, as they travel to Durham, N.C. to compete in the Duke Golf Classic at the Duke University Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
