Tournament concludes fall season

Wilmington, N.C. -- Virginia Tech recorded a three-round total of 894 and finished in 12th place at the Landfall Tradition at the par 72, 6,973-yard Country Club at Landfall Jack Nicklaus Course in Wilmington, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) led Tech with an six-over-par 222 and finished tied for 30th place overall with Ross McGowan of Tennessee. Justin Smith of Minnesota won medalist honors with an eight-under-par 208, defeating teammate Ryan Paulson by two strokes. Smith shot a 65 on Sunday. Stinnett closed the tournament with a 68, the second-lowest round of the final day and Tech's lowest round of the tournament.

Sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) and redshirt senior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) tied for 36th place at 224. Redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) finished tied for 52nd at 229 and freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) finished in 60th place at 235. Tech shot a final round 294 on Sunday.

Minnesota won the 12-team event with a 13-under-par 851, 15 strokes ahead of Ohio State. Tennessee finished third at 868 and host UNC Wilmington was fourth at 869. Penn State, Tulsa, Purdue, Memphis, Missouri and Florida State rounded out the top 10. East Tennessee State was 11th at 889, five strokes ahead of the Hokies.

This is the final event of the fall season for the Hokies. Tech will begin the spring season on Feb. 22-24, 2004 at the Puerto Rico Invitational at the Rio Mar Country Club - River Course in San Juan, P.R. The tournament is hosted by Purdue.
