HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a first round 13-over-par 297 and is tied for seventh place at the Long Cove Collegiate Invitational on Friday afternoon. The event is being played at the 7,026-yard, par-71 Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

The Hokies are tied with Georgia Tech and Southern California in the 15-team field that features many of the top teams in the country.

Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) fired a one-over-par 72 in the opening round and is tied for ninth place, with seven other players, five strokes behind Bill Haas of Wake Forest, the number-one ranked player in the nation.

Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) shot a two-over-par 73 and is tied for 17th place. Senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) and junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) each shot a five-over-par 76 and are tied for 40th place. Sophomore Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) is tied for 50th place after shooting an opening-round 77.

Texas leads the event with a four-over-par 288. Clemson and Oklahoma State are tied for second at 292 and Purdue is fourth at 293. Georgia is fifth at 294 and Wake Forest is sixth at 295, two strokes ahead of the Hokies, USC and Georgia Tech. Oklahoma and Arizona State are tied for tenth at 299.

The second round will be played Saturday, with the final round taking place Sunday.
