Hokies Travel to Mattaponi Springs
Tech makes only in-state appearance this season in Ruther Glen

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech will make its only Commonwealth of Virginia appearance of the 2005-06 season, as the Hokies travel to Ruther Glen, Va. for the Mattaponi Springs Shootout/VCU Invitational on October 3 and 4.

The 14-team event, hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University, features a strong field from around the country. Tech is one of four Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the tournament, which also boasts host VCU, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Kent State, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Richmond, Tulsa, Wake Forest and Xavier. Wake Forest is ranked eighth in the current GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches' poll, while four schools, including the Hokies, are ranked in the current Golfweek/Sagarin poll's top 50.

The first-year, 54-hole event will be played at the 6,937 yard, par 72, Bob Lohmann designed Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Va. There will be 36 holes of action on Monday and the final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning.

The Hokies will be making their second appearance of the season. Tech finished fourth at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at the Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. in mid-September.

Tech will be led by junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.), who finished eighth in Knoxville and sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) who finished 10th individually at the Tournament of Champions. Also competing this week at Mattaponi Springs is sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands), freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) and senior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio).
