October 13, 2005

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team will conclude its string of three tournaments in two weeks, as they travel to Jonesborough, Tenn. to compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges on Oct. 15-16. The tournament will once again be held at the 7,001-yard, par 72 Ridges Colf and Country Club and will be hosted by East Tennessee State.

This is the eighth year for the 15-team event, and the fourth time that the Hokies have appeared in the tournament. Fourteen of the 15 teams competing are currently ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll, including No. 83 Virginia Tech. Oklahoma, the only unranked team, will be making its 2005 fall debut this weekend. The Hokies are one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams competing.

The 54-hole event will begin with practice rounds on Friday, Oct. 14. The first two rounds of competition will be played on Saturday morning and will conclude with the final 18 holes on Sunday morning.

Tech will be led by sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.). Also competing this week at the Ridges are sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands), freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) and junior Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales).

The Hokies will be making their fourth appearance of the season. Tech finished fourth at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at the Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. in mid-September, 10th at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout in Ruther Glen, Va. on Oct. 3-4 and 11th at the Coca-Cola Duke Classic on Oct. 9-10.
