Hokies Tenth at the Ridges

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Virginia Tech shot a two round total of 590 and is in tenth place at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges. The tournament is being played at the 7,001 yard, par 72 the Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn., on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) led the Hokies on day one with a two-round total of one-under-par 143 and is tied for seventh place. Wakely shot the best round of the day for Virginia Tech with a first round two-under-par 70. Rhys Davies of host East Tennessee State leads the event with a total of seven-under-par 137 and leads Florian Fritsch of South by two strokes.

Sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) each shot 149 and are tied for 36th. Freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) is tied for 46th place at 150 and sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands) is tied for 73rd at 156.

South Carolina leads the event at 570, four strokes better than North Carolina. TCU is third at 577 and ETSU is fourth at 578. Kent State is fifth at 584, Auburn is sixth at 585 and Florida State is seventh at 587. Tennessee and Alabama are tied in eighth place at 589, one stroke better than the Hokies. Northwestern is 11th at 595 and Oklahoma is 12th at 597. Wake Forest, Virginia and LSU rounded out the field on day one.

The 15-team event will conclude on Sunday with the final 18 holes. Tech concludes its fall season on Oct. 28-30 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
