Hokies Finish Eighth at the Ridges

JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Virginia Tech shot a final round 290 for a 54-hole total of 880 and finished eighth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges on Sunday afternoon. The tournament was played at the 7,001 yard, par 72 the Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. on Saturday and Sunday.

Junior Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) recorded his best performance as a Hokie, with a three-round total of five-under-par 211. He finished in third place. Wakely shot the best round of the day for Virginia Tech on Saturday with a first round two-under-par 70. On Sunday, Wakely shot a four-under-par 68, tied for the low round overall in the tournament. Rhys Davies of host East Tennessee State won medalist honors with a total of 11-under-par 205 and defeated Florian Fritsch of South Carolina by three strokes.

Junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) shot a final round 73 for a three-round total of 222 and a tie for 26th place. Sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished tied for 51st at 227 and sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands) shot a final round even-par 72 for a three-round total of 228 and he tied for 60th place overall. Freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) tied for 69th place at 229.

South Carolina won the event at 859, eight strokes better than Auburn. TCU was third at 869, ETSU was fourth at 871 and Alabama and North Carolina tied for fifth at 876. Kent State was seventh at 877, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Tennessee was ninth at 881 and Northwestern and Florida State tied for 10th at 890. Wake Forest (891), Oklahoma (895), Virginia (898) and LSU (899) rounded out the field.

Tech entered Sunday's final round in 10th place in the 15-team event, but the final round 290 by Tech was fourth-best on the day. Tech concludes its fall season on Oct. 28-30 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
