Hokies Seventh at Mattaponi Springs

RUTHER GLEN, Va. -- Virginia Tech shot a two round total of 579 and is in seventh place at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout/VCU Invitational at the 6,911 yard, par 72, Bob Lohmann designed Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Va. Tech shot an opening round 290 on Monday morning and followed that with a 289 in the afternoon round.

Freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.), playing in just his second collegiate event and his first in team scoring, leads the Hokies with a two-round total of one-under-par 143 and is tied for 16th place, overall. Weaver shot a first round, two-under-par 70 and then shot 73 in the afternoon round. Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest leads the event with a two round total of 11-under-par 133.

Sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 24th at one-over-par 145 and senior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) is tied for 33rd at three-over-par 147. Junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 39th at 148 and sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands) is tied for 48th at 149.

Wake Forest leads the tournament with a two round total of 558, eight strokes better than Tulsa. Kent State is third at 567 Xavier is fourth at 569 and North Carolina is fifth at 574. East Tennessee State is sixth at 578, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Maryland is eighth at 580 and UNC Wilmington, Richmond and Missouri are tied for ninth at 584. Host Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina, UNC Greensboro and VCU's "B" team round out the 15-team field

The tournament, hosted by VCU, features a strong field from around the country. Tech is one of four Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the event. Wake Forest is ranked eighth in the current GCAA/Bridgestone Coaches' poll, while four schools, including the Hokies, are ranked in the current Golfweek/Sagarin poll's top 50.

The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday morning. Tech next plays at Duke on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 9-10.
