Hokies Finish 10th at Mattaponi Springs
MacDonald ties for 28th place individually
October 4, 2005 RUTHER GLEN, Va. -- Virginia Tech shot a final round 303 en route to a three-round total of 882 and finished 10th at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout/VCU Invitational. The tournament was held at the 6,911 yard, par 72, Bob Lohmann designed Mattaponi Springs Golf Club in Ruther Glen, Va. Sophomore Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) paced the Hokies with a three-round total of three-over-par 219 and tied for 28th place overall. MacDonald shot a final round 74 on Tuesday. Day one leader Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest shot a three-round total of 14-under-par 202 and defeated teammate Webb Simpson by one stroke for medalist honors. Freshman Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.), playing in just his second collegiate event and his first in team scoring, tied for 33rd at four-over-par 220 and junior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) finished in a tie for 46th place at 223. Sophomore Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, Netherlands) tied for 56th at 226 and senior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) tied for 62nd place at 228. Wake Forest won the tournament with a three round total of 25-under-par 839, 14 strokes better than Tulsa and Kent State, which tied for second at 853. Xavier was fourth at 860 and North Carolina and Missouri tied for fifth at 861. East Tennessee State was seventh at 862, UNC Wilmington was eighth at 879 and Maryland was ninth at 880, two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Richmond, UNC Greensboro, host Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina and VCU's "B" team rounded out the 15-team field. Tech shot rounds of 290 and 289 in the first two rounds, played on Monday and entered the final round in seventh place. Tech next plays at Duke on Sunday and Monday, Oct. 9-10.
